White reading book iconography - The Centre for Literacy & Learning

We pride ourselves in providing a unique service within our community.  Rather than offering a wide-range of tutoring services (math, science, homework support, SAT preparation, etc.), we specialize in the area of literacy development. We believe that reading is the key to school success!

Many, although not all, of our students have a diagnosed reading/writing disability or dyslexia.  A reading disability or dyslexia is often unexpected as it presents itself despite average to above average intelligence, rich childhood experiences and exposure to books, and good classroom teaching.

Within the Centre for Literacy & Learning, we offer the following services:

Literacy Assessments

Quick targeted assessments that help to:

  • Identify a child’s literacy profile (phonological processing, phonics, word recognition, oral reading fluency, reading comprehension, spelling, and written expression skills), and
  • Plan an individualized tutoring program.

Remedial Tutoring

*Offered in-person or online.

Use of Direct Instruction methodology for the core of each student’s program – supplemented with intensive phonological awareness training and implementation of tools/strategies from the Orton-Gillingham approach.

Our instruction is:

  • Personalized –  proceeds at a rate that matches the child’s needs, ability level and rate of progress
  • Explicit – concepts are taught using direct instruction
  • Systematic – skills are taught sequentially, with intensive practice and continual feedback
  • Cumulative – lessons build on previous knowledge, moving from simple to more difficult concepts.

We target the following areas:

  • Phonological Awareness
  • Phonics & Word Recognition
  • Fluency
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Spelling & Written Expression
